Unusual WW1 Hallmarked Silver Royal Artillery Sweetheart Brooch by Frederick Narborough - 1914
Here on offer is an unusual WW1 hallmarked silver Royal Artillery sweetheart brooch by Frederick Narborough 1914.
This unusual example of a sweetheart brooch depicts a crossed rifle and sword, with a Royal Artillery cannon crest/badge in the centre.
The crest depicts an artillery cannon with 'Ubique' (Everywhere) scroll above and 'Quo fas et gloria ducunt' (Wherever right and glory lead) scroll below.
The reverse still has its original long retaining pin and “C” clasp.
Also on the reverse are a clear set of English silver hallmarks.
The hallmarks are an anchor for the assay office of Birmingham, the Lion Passant for English silver and the date letter “p” for the year 1914.
There is also the makers mark “F.N”, which relates to the silversmith, Frederick Narborough, of Birmingham.
I believe that a member of the Royal Artillery regiment would have given this brooch to his sweetheart, when he went off to war.
The brooch is in excellent condition and is an unusual version of this type of regimental brooch.
It measures 2” (5.2cm) wide and weighs 4.6g.
