WW1 British Rowntree & Co. Ltd “Gift to the Troops” Chocolate Tin Depicting George V with Sliding Base Cover 1915

Here on offer is a genuine WW1 British Rowntree & Co. Ltd “Gift to the Troops” chocolate tin with a sliding base cover. circa 1915.

This scarce WW1 commemorative tin was produced by Rowntree & Co Ltd of York, known for their chocolate and cocoa products.

The lid features a lithographed portrait of King George V in full military dress, framed by an oval garland, and surrounded by vibrant regimental and national flags, including the Union Jack.

The lid hinges open to allow access to a compartment that would have originally held some Rowntree’s chocolate.

The sides of the tin are decorated with gilt floral and fruit motifs.

The base has a sliding panel cover and a match stricker, so it was assumed soldiers would use this thinner compartment to store cigarettes and matches.

Produced around 1915, this Rowntree & Co Ltd chocolate tin was a patriotic commercial item designed for the home front during WW1. Unlike the official Princess Mary gift tin, which was government-supported and sent directly to troops, these tins were privately sold as morale-boosting gifts or souvenirs. This tin reflects Rowntree's wartime marketing and strong patriotic appeal.

This original genuine tin now shows signs of paint chipping and crazing to the finish. The tin is sound with no splits and the sliding base cover works perfectly.

It measures 6.1” (15.4cm) by 3” (7.8cm) by 1.2” (3cm) and weighs 140g.
