Pair of WW1 Trench Art British 4.5” Howitzer Brass Shell Case Bases Engraved with Daffodils and the Famous Battles of ARRAS and VIMY
Here on offer is an impressive pair of WW1 “Trench Art“, British 4.5” Howitzer brass shell case bases, engraved with daffodils and the names of the famous battles of ARRAS and VIMY in 1917.
Both of the brass bases are now only 0.8” high with have a rounded lip, so that can be used as a trinket or coin dish.
Both are engraved on the inside with a laurel wreath, then one with the battle name of ARRAS and the other with VIMY. A circular brass disc has been fitted to the centre, engraved with a daffodil flower head.
These fine pieces of Trench Art were made to commemorate the battles of ARRAS and VIMY, possibly for one of the Welsh regiments that took part in both of the battles, given they depict the national flower of Wales?
On the bottom of the base, they are marked with 4.5 in HOWr and the date 1916, along with various other British artillery shell case markings, crows foot arrow, LOT no. etc.
Each one is 0.8” (2.2cm) high and 5.5” (14cm) diameter at the rim.
Together they weigh a heavy 2Kg.
