Unusual Antique English Hallmarked Silver Swastika “Good Luck” Bangle by Arthur Johnson Smith 1923
Here on offer is an unusual English hallmarked silver Swastika bangle by Arthur Johnson Smith, dating to 1923, so now an antique piece!
In the 1920s, the swastika was a popular good luck charm in jewellery, long before its negative association with Nazism became widespread, making these pieces historical artifacts of that era's design.
I am aware that lot of early Swastika jewellery was obtained by the many members of the Nazi party for their ladies to wear as symbols of their allegiance to the Nazi party. This maybe what happened with this beautiful piece, who knows?
The bangle is made up of fourteen pierced silver Swastika discs, apparently made from a strip of sterling silver, that has been looped together to make a continuous round bangle.
On the inside of one of the discs, there is a clear set of English silver hallmarks, the Lion Passant for English silver (925), an anchor for the assay office of Birmingham and the date letter “y” for the year 1923.
It also shows the makers mark that are the letters “AJS”, that relates to the silversmith Arthur Johnson Smith of Birmingham, England.
Arthur Johnson SMITH founded his workshop “Variety Works” in 1882. Located at 46 Frederick Street, Birmingham, the company produced jewellery until the late 1930s.
The pendant is in great condition but does seem to show two of the discs with silver solder repairs, but one might be where it was originally joined? Personally given this piece is now over 100 years old, I wouldn’t risk wearing it, but just use it as an impressive display piece, even in a German WW2 display!
The bangle measures 2.7” (6.9cm) inside diameter and each disc is 0.6” (1.5cm) diameter.
It weighs 17.6g of solid sterling silver
