INERT WW2 No.36M Mk I British Mills Grenade by JP&S Ltd with a base plug by RBD dated 1941

Here on offer is great example of a now INERT WW2 No.36M Mk I British Mills Grenade by JP&S Ltd being John Pilling & Sons Ltd, Colne, Lancashire, England, with a base plug by RBD being R.B. Davies & Co based in Victoria and Sydney, Australia and dated 1941.

The No.36M Mk I “Mesopotamian” variant was specially designed and waterproofed with shellac for use in the hot climate of Mesopotamia in 1917 at first and remained as the British army's standard hand-grenade from the 1930s to 1972.

The front of the cast iron “pineapple” body of the grenade, has the letters JP&S Ltd stamped on it, which indicates the manufacturer of the body was John Pilling & Sons Ltd, Colne, Lancashire, England.

I believe that JP&S Ltd made 3,138,561 No.36M Mk I grenades between July 1939 and March 1945.

The grenade retaining pin can be removed and you can feel the spring trying to push the striker down, but I haven’t done that, as getting the striker back in place against the spring pressure can be a nightmare! If you do want to do this, please be very careful as the striker will fly out of the bottom is the plug is removed.

On the front is the filler plug, that is unmarked and is made from Zinc.

It has a knurled edged Zinc base plug that is stamped with various ordnance markings, being:

No.36 M Mk I
Z
R.B.D.
8-41

The manufacturer was R.B.D. being R.B. Davies & Co, based in Victoria and Sydney, Australia and dated 1941.
.
These grenades were made from a number of individually manufactured parts, body, base plug etc, that were made by different manufactures and then assembled.

The grenade body now has a lovely dark patina finish with the dark shellac finish to the metal.

PLEASE NOTE: This item is free from explosives (FFE and contains no explosive elements or parts thereof).

It measures 4” (10.3cm) high (to the stricker pin) and is approximately 2.3” (5.8cm) diameter.

It weighs a heavy 609g.
