Ornate 20th Century Syrian Neck Dagger with Horn Grip Scales
Here on offer is an 0rnate Syrian neck dagger with horn grip scales dating to the mid 20th Century.
I think these examples where made for the souvenir market over 50 years ago now, but actually make great display pieces and are becoming collectable in their own right.
The dagger has a straight double edged steel blade with some engraving along the central spine on both sides. The blade is in great condition with some light areas of staining to the finish.
All the metal fittings including the sheath are made from nickel or silver plated brass, which now shows some areas of plating loss.
The hilt is set with thick horn grip scales that are held in place with a raised brass rivet. The pommel and bolster are decorated with a twisted wire or rope pattern.
The straight sheath is intricately engraved with a what looks like a Persian warrior in period costume surrounded by foliate engraving and Arabic symbols. On the back of the sheath is deeply engraved with more Arabic symbols and what looks to be a palm leaf.
The sheath has eye loops and rings on either side at the top through which a cord would have been strung allowing for the knife to be worn around the neck.
The blade measures 5.7” (14.4cm) and the knife itself is 10.25” (26cm) long.
It weighs 315g.
