Antique Yemeni Jambiya Dagger with Horn Handle and an Ornate Silver Filigree and Leather Covered Sheath

Here on offer is a fine example of an antique Yemeni Jambiya dagger with horn handle and an ornate silver filigree and leather covered wooden sheath.

Curved daggers like these were most commonly presented in Yemeni ceremonies as a symbol of honour and manhood, but they were also worn by nomadic tribes, in order to provide protection against any potential danger.

These practical uses add a layer of authenticity to this piece, which already displays so much in the beauty in its design, most notably the silver engravings on the wooden sheath.
This impressive example has a traditionally shaped blond horn handle that has a finely applied pattern of silver Piqué work on the front, along with two brass coned studs.
The handle fits tightly to the double-edged curved polished steel blade that has a central ridge. The antique blade is actually in excellent condition, with just some scratch marks.
The blade and wide ferrell fits tightly into the sheath, that is made of wood covered in brown leather that is stitched in place.
The front has finely applied low grade silver wire and filigree decoration, along with some chased decoration.

A Jambiya, also spelled janbiya, jambya, jambia and janbia, also known as a shibriyeh in the Levant, is a specific type of dagger with a short-curved blade with a central ridge that originated from the Hadhramaut Governorate region of Yemen. They have spread to other countries in the Middle East, to other countries in the Arab world, and to parts of South Asia and Southeast Asia.

This fine Jambiya dagger is excellent condition with no damage that I can see and it makes an impressive display piece.

It has a 8.5” (21.5cm) curved blade and the whole dagger measures 12.6” (32cm) long.
Inserted in the sheath, it measures approximately 14” (35.5cm) long.

It weighs 375g.
