Rare Dual Commemorative “Wilkinson Sword Ltd. Cramlington 1963-1999” and “WORLD PEACE FOR THE THIRD MILLENNIUM” Miniature Sword by Wilkinson Sword – Mint in Box
Here on offer is a rare dual commemorative “Wilkinson Sword Ltd. Cramlington 1963-1999” and “WORLD PEACE FOR THE THIRD MILLENNIUM” miniature sword by Wilkinson Sword, circa 2000.
I believe this sword was originally released as a commemorative piece to mark the transition into the third millennium, the year 2000, often associated with global themes of peace and reflection prevalent during that era.
The words: “WORLD PEACE FOR THE THIRD MILLENNIUM” have been etched on one side of the blade.
What is interesting it on the other side of the blade it has also been etched with the words: “Wilkinson Sword Ltd. Cramlington 1963-1999”.
This relates to the closure of the Wilkinson Sword factory in Cramlington, Northumberland. Its closure was announced in late 1999, with plans to shut down by June 2000. This decision marked a significant turning point in the company’s history, moving manufacturing away from the UK due to a decline in demand for traditional double-edge razors and a desire to reduce capacity.
The announcement in late 1999 resulted in the loss of 350 jobs, a move described at the time as a "colossal blow" to the community.
Wilkinson Sword stated that the closure was prompted by a "significant global excess" of razor blade production capacity, causing them to close their only remaining UK plant.
My understanding is that a small number of these dual commemorative miniature swords were made to be awarded to key members of the Wilkinson Sword staff, who worked at Cramlington, to recognise their time at that plant.
Also on the blade near the crossguard it is etched with “By Royal Appointment”, E II R cypher and the Wilkinson Sword Crest.
The impressive gold plated handle has been finely cast depicting three ladies, possibly goddesses, supporting a starburst circular disc above their heads. Below them in the crossguard is the image of the globe, with a starburst behind it.
This beautifully crafted stainless steel miniature is in mint condition and appears to have been in its box since it was manufactured.
The miniature comes in its original silk lined, green lidded box.
It measures 8.9” (22.5cm) long and with the box weighs 158g.
