Antique Presentation Mallet to Mrs Down for Stone Laying Ceremony at Rock Chapel Yelverton Devon Aug 8th 1906
Here on offer is an antique presentation mallet to Mrs Down for the stone laying ceremony at Rock Chapel, Yelverton, Devon, on August 8th 1906.
Antique ceremonial wooden mallets were traditionally presented to nobilities or high-ranking officials invited to lay the foundation stones of churches and other significant buildings. These tools served as commemorative gifts, often featuring fine craftsmanship, intricate carvings, or precious metal mountings to reflect the importance of the event.
This hand turned mallet seems to be made from walnut or possibly a light oak wood and has a turned and tapering handle.
Pinned on the front is a silver shield that is engraved with the details:
ROCK CHAPEL
YELVERTON, DEVON
STONE LAYING CEREMONY
AUG.8.1906

TO
Mrs DOWN
It is also stamped with the sterling silver 925 mark, the Birmingham (triangle) import mark and the date letter “e” for 1904. It also has the maker’s mark of A.B & Co. for the silversmiths, A Bromet & Co of Jewin Street, London.
The mallet is in excellent condition with just some light indentations on one side, I assume where it was used in the ceremony.
It measures 7.75” (19.7cm) long and is 2.75” (7cm) diameter at its widest point.
It weighs 180g.
