Near Mint ERII Royal Navy Officer’s Sword by FIRMIN AND SONS PLC with Scabbard and Dress Knot c1980
Here on offer is a near mint example of an ERII Royal Navy Officer’s 1827 pattern sword by FIRMIN AND SONS PLC with its original scabbard and a dress knot, circa 1980.
The beautiful mint 30.9” single edged fullered blade has detailed etching on both sides and displays the “ERII” cypher along with oak leaf and anchor decoration and the FIRMIN AND SONS PLC EST. 1677 maker’s mark. The polished cartouche sections of the blade are still blank, so could be engraved with the new owner’s name and details, if required.
On the top edge it is stamped with a number, possibly a serial number, “40046”. I can’t trace any FIRMIN records online, but estimate this blade dates to around 1980.
The beautiful anchor detailed gilt brass hilt guard and lion’s mask pommel retain all of the original gilt finish.
The white fish skin grip is perfect, with all the grip wire in place.
The folding guard section works perfectly and locates properly onto the top scabbard locket’s retaining pin as it should.
The gilt brass mounted leather scabbard is also in excellent condition, with just some minimal loss to the gilt finish and some minor scuff marks to the leather.
It is fitted with a perfect black and gold dress knot and the sword sheathes and draws very well.
I believe these swords can still be used by serving British, Australian, Canadian or New Zealand naval officers as well as making a great addition to a discerning collector that only buys the best.
Firmin and Sons is the oldest supplier of swords still operating in the British Isles having added “Sword Cutlers” to its trade’s description in 1838. They still currently hold the supply and refurbishment of Swords Contract for the MoD to this day.
The fine etched steel blade measures 30.9” (78.5cm) long and the whole sword (blade in scabbard) measures 38” (96.5cm).
It weighs a heavy 1.15Kg.
