Impressive Large WW2 Letter Opener made from Shrapnel Recovered from the LONDON BLITZ 1940-41

Here on offer is an impressive and very large 14” long, WW2 letter opener made from shrapnel recovered during the 1940-41 London Blitz.

I believe that some of these were professionally made by firms like Asprey of London, but many were hand-fashioned by civilians or soldiers behind the lines using available workshop tools.

This is a real piece of WW2 historical "trench art" that has been fashioned from German bomb fragments collected during the 1940–41 aerial bombardment of London, known as the “London Blitz”.

This is the largest version of this type of letter opener that I have seen, others being about 10” long.

The rough and jagged shrapnel grip is 5” long and the worked blade section is about 9” long and on one side has been stamped with the details:

LONDON BLITZ
1940-41

These items served as both functional desk accessories and tangible mementos of the Home Front experience that London’s faced during that dark period during WW2.

This example is in excellent condition with just some slight areas darkening to the polished blade section and the tip now has a very slight curve on one edge.

It actually measures 14.1” (36cm) long and weighs a heavy 300g.

Please see my pictures for the details of the condition, which complement this description.
