Antique British Armorial Wax Seal Impression Proof of the BUNBURY Family Crest by The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company Ltd with Original Case

Here on offer is an antique British armorial wax seal impression proof of the BUNBURY family crest by The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company Ltd with its original round case.

The octagonal shaped seal impression displays a finely engraved image of a leopard's face pierced by two swords in saltire, which is the crest for the BUNBURY family.

I believe this piece probably relates to the 10th Baronet, Sir Henry Charles John Bunbury (1855–1930), nephew of the 9th Baronet and grandson of the 7th Baronet (son of the 7th Baronet's third son, Colonel Henry William St Pierre Bunbury).

The engraving quality reflects professional die-sinking of the later Victorian or early Edwardian period, likely produced as a master proof prior to cutting a steel, silver, or hardstone matrix seal.

The deep vermilion wax composition, glossy surface finish, and concentric moulded surround are consistent with early 20th century heraldic workshop practice. Given the small size of the crest, I imagine this was the proof for a signet ring seal.

The impression remains entirely original and housed within its period round paper-and-pasteboard case, that has the hand cut label for The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company Ltd. They were a prestigious London-based jeweller and silversmith established in 1880 at 112 Regent Street by William Gibson and John Lawrence Langman. Known for high-quality silver, jewellery, and watches, they became a major manufacturer and retailer before merging with Garrard & Co Ltd 1952.

This confirms the impression must have been made after 1880 and hence relates to the 10th or even possibly the earlier 9th Baronet Bunbury.

Surviving heraldic impressions in their original presentation cases are uncommon, as most were discarded after approval or replaced by working signets.

This is a fine and authentic example of British armorial craftsmanship and represents a tangible artifact of heraldic identity and provincial gentry lineage.

The case measures 1.75” (4.5cm) diameter and the seal impression measures 1.25” (3.2cm) across the flats.

It weighs 5g.
