Unique WW2 British POW Hand Carved Wooden “Arm of a Chair” linked to the Royal Artillery
Here on offer is an unusual and unique WW2 British POW hand carved wooden “arm of a chair” linked to the Royal Artillery.
I have never come across a POW made piece like this before. The wooden chair arm rest has been beautifully carved with various images, consisting of the crest of the Royal Artillery, the four suits of cards, spades, hearts etc, along with a horse’s head surrounded by intricate lattice carvings.
There is also the image of an elephant and wild dog or hyena, in an African scene. This makes me think this was carved by a member of the British forces Royal Artillery, who was interned in one of the North African POW camps, during WW2. There is no provenance with this piece, so I can’t really be sure where exactly it was craved?
It also has been painted with what look like the initials of the man who crafted it, CHW along with the reference 1332C and a C set inside a circle. I have no idea what this refers too, as its to short for a service number? Maybe it was a POW camp reference used at the time. Interestingly it has been painted with a yellow and blue stripe, which again I can’t identify?
If anybody has an idea as to what these markings mean, please just drop me an email.
Underneath the arm you can see the five holes that would have originally held the arm support struts.
This is a really unique and impressive WW2 POW display piece that is in excellent condition.
It measures 18.5” (47cm) long by 2.1” (5.3cm) wide and 0.8” (2cm) thick.
It weighs 310g.
