Vintage Throwing Knife and Leather Sheath by J. Nowill and Sons Sheffield England c1952

Here on offer is an unusual vintage throwing knife and leather sheath by J. Nowill and Sons, Sheffield, England, circa 1952.

The throwing knife has a double-edged thick steel spear tip blade, making for a well-balanced and weighty throwing knife. The edges of the tip are still quite sharp with some light pitting and it now has some age greying to the finish, on both sides of the blade. The long tapering section of the blade has an original blunt unsharpened edge.

On one side it is lightly etched with the maker’s details and trademarks, being:

J. NOWILL & SONS
SHEFFIELD. ENGLAND
ESTABLISHED A.D.1700

Along with the trademarks of the “Crossed Keys” and “Star” above the letter “D”.

It is also etched with a Registration Number:

BRITISH RD
868846

This number dates the design registration to the years 1952/53.

John Nowill & Sons have been making high quality knives for over six generations. They are the parent company for three other old established Sheffield knife makers, F.E & J. R. Hopkinson, J. Adams Co. and Austin McGillivray & Company.

The blade and tang are made from one piece of steel, which runs the full length of the grip.

The tapering grip is made from two sections of what look like ivory coloured celluloid, fixed to the tang by three stell pins. The grip is in excellent undamaged condition.

The small sheath is made from brown leather and is stitched together along the sides. Someone has etched a small square on the front.

The exposed metal blade section measures 3.3” (8.5cm) long and the whole knife is 6.75” (17.2cm). The sharp section of the blade is 1.4” (3.5cm) long.

It weighs 62g.
