Arcadian Crested China WW1 British Tank - City of Bristol - c1917
Here on offer is an example of an Arcadian (A & S) crested china model of a WW1 (Female) Mark IV British Tank, with the crest for the City of Bristol, circa 1917.
The Mark IV was introduced in 1917 and it benefited from significant developments of the Mark I tank. The main improvements were in armour, the re-siting of the fuel tank and ease of transport. A total of 1,220 Mk IV’s were built: 420 “Males”, 595 “Females” and 205 Tank Tenders (unarmed vehicles used to carry supplies), which made it the most numerous British tank of the war. The Mark IV was first used in mid 1917 at the Battle of Messines Ridge. It remained in British service until the end of the war, and a small number served briefly with other combatants afterwards.
On the top of this model is a beautiful coloured transfer image of the shield for the City of Bristol.
On the base is the printed makers crowned crest for:
A & S
STOKE – ON – TRENT
ARCADIAN CHINA
and the words:
MODEL OF TANK
Rd. No. 658588
This Registered Design Number dates the design registration to the years 1916/17
The tank model does have a couple of hairline cracks, one near the top of the crest and the other on one side. There is also some loss of gilt to the edges of the top turret.
The model measures 4.3” (11.2cm) long by 2.25” (5.6cm) wide.
It weighs 82g.
