WW1 (Hastings) Arcadian Crested China Model of the British E Class Submarine - HMS E4 - c1915
Here on offer is an excellent example of a WW1 (Hastings) Arcadian crested china model, of the British E Class Submarine HMS E4, circa1915.
HMS E4 was a British E-class submarine launched in 1912 that served during WW1 in the North Sea as part of the 8th Flotilla, based at Harwich. It is known for being involved in early, dramatic North Sea engagements, such as the Battle of Heligoland Bight (August 1914) and successfully torpedoed the German auxiliary cruiser VAN GOSSLER on 28 January 1915.
On 15 August 1916, E4 collided with its sister ship E41 during exercises, leading to all 33 crew members on E4 losing their lives. Both E4 and E41 were later raised, repaired, and returned to service, with E4 operating until the end of 1918. She was scrapped in 1922.
On the left hand side of this example, it has the colour transfer crest for the English town of Hastings.
Painted in gilt on the turret and fin of the submarine is the reference “E4”.
On the base is the printed makers crowned crest for:
A & S
STOKE – ON – TRENT
ARCADIAN CHINA
It is also marked with who it was made for, which I believe reads as:
MANUFACTURED FOR
H. A. JEPSON
ROBERTSON ST
HASTINGS
The submarine model is in near mint condition, no chips or cracks and no loss of gilt.
A great piece of antique WW1 crested china that makes a great display item.
The model measures 3.75” (9.5cm) long and weighs 32g.
