Inert British Jet Engine No.9 Starter Cartridge as used on RAF Canberra Bombers c1974
Here on offer is an inert British jet engine No.9 starter cartridge as used on RAF Canberra bombers in the 1970’s.
My understanding is this is a No. 9 or 10, Engine Starter Cartridge.
The No. 9 Cartridge was for use in the Rolls Royce turbo-starter Type SBS 720 Mk 1. (single chamber) as fitted to Avon 1 engines in the Canberra 1, 2, 3 & 4 (possibly others).
The only real difference between the No. 9 and 10 cartridges is the electric primer used - No 43 on the No. 9 and No. 48 on the No. 10.
The base shows the stamped British ordinance marks, along with a “crows foot” MOD mark:
CART ELEC ENG START RLB 74/ 8
076 GD 74
This implies it was made by Royal Laboratory Birtley or Royal Ordnance Factory Birtley (RLB), in 1974.
The cartridge case is in excellent condition, no dents or splits, just with a slightly turned over lip at the top.
It measures 7.1” (18cm) high by 3.25” (8.3cm) diameter at the base.
It weighs 502g.
