Here on offer is a beautiful mint in box “MIB” example of a Japanese K24 Komai Damascene Mt Fuji gold and silver inlay, Shakudo multi-function pocket knife with its original box.

Japanese Damascene, known as zogan (象嵌), is a traditional metalworking art involving the inlaying of 24k gold and silver metal into an oxidised blackened iron or steel base. Originating over 1,000 years ago, it is renowned for producing delicate, intricate scenes—such as temples, birds, and Mt. Fuji, on jewellery, trinket boxes, knives and formerly, samurai sword fittings, with Kyoto being a primary center for this art.

On the front scale of this knife, it depicts a Japanese damascene landscape scene with Mount Fuji in the background and is marked k24, indicating 24 carat gold was used, along with silver.

On the back are what look to be a pair of flying cranes.

This fine example is a rare version of a multi-function pocket knife, consisting of 7 stainless steel tools: a 2.5” blade stamped with “STAINLESS HIGH STEEL”, scissors, can opener, ear scoop, nail file, spike and what might be a pipe cleaning tool?

All the tools are in mint unused condition and the knife looks to have been kept in its original patterned box since it was made.

Originating from mid-century Japan, this knife embodies the refined craftsmanship and delicate beauty of the era, making it a rare find for knife collectors. Its handcrafted Damascene detailing offers a unique texture and depth that catches the light beautifully.

The blade measures 2” (5cm) and the knife with all the tools folded in, measures 2.5” (6.4cm).

It weighs 75g.
