Unusual WW1 Turkish-Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian Bullet Trench Art Letter Opener 1919
Here on offer is an unusual WW1 Turkish and Austro-Hungarian bullet trench art letter opener.
During WW1, the Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman Empires were key members of the Central Powers alliance, fighting alongside Germany. Both empires faced massive, parallel challenges: internal ethnic unrest, military struggles, and a rapid collapse that ultimately led to their dissolution by 1919–1920. Vienna (Wien), as the capital of the Habsburg Empire, was the center of political decision-making, while the Ottoman Empire (Turkey) aimed for survival against enemies like Russia.
The letter opener has a scimitar shaped blade that is engraved on one side with some detailed stipple pin hammer work including the Turkish “Moonstar” and the word:
TURKEI
One the other side it is engraved with:
1919 WIEN
The blade fits securely into an inert WWI Turkish-German Mauser type bullet head and inert cartridge, with markings on the base that date it to 1917.
The letter opener measures 6” (15.3cm) long with a 3” (7.6cm) curved blade and weighs 32g.
