Unique WW1 French Artillery Gallipoli Campaign Bullet Trench Art Dagger Shaped Letter Opener with Bullet Sheath
Here on offer is an unusual WW1 French Artillery Gallipoli Campaign Bullet Trench Art Letter Opener.
French artillery played a key role against the Ottoman Empire during World War I, primarily during the 1915-1916 Gallipoli Campaign, where French forces utilized 75mm field guns and heavier ordnance to support infantry landings and combat entrenched Ottoman positions. French batteries focused on shattering Ottoman defences, often engaging in intense, close-quarters counter-battery fire in the Dardanelles.
This letter opener has a 3.25” pointed dagger shaped polished steel blade, that now shows some signs of greying to the finish.
The blade fits securely into an inert WW1 French 8mm lebel brass bullet case. On the front and the top, it has been fitted with a large and small brass French Artillery button, that both depict a flaming grenade, crossed cannons and a pile of cannon balls.
The crossguard is made from two bullet heads that have been bent to form curved tips.
The sheath has been made from what looks to be a WWI Turkish-German Mauser type bullet, with a polish head. The base has been removed and the brass case flatted at that end, to form a slotted top that the blade fits into.
Fitted on the front is a Turkish (Ottoman Empire) military button, that depicts the “Moon Star” symbol.
This unusual and possibly unique trench art letter opener is actually in excellent condition, with the buttons retaining a lot of their original detailing.
The letter opener measures 5.4” (13.5cm) long with a 3.25” (8.3cm) blade. When inserted in the sheath, it measures 5.5” (14cm) long.
It weighs 50g.
