Original Large WW1 Royal Navy Mine Clearance Service (MCS) White Metal Cap Badge c1919
Here on offer is an original WW1 Royal Navy Mine Clearance Service (MCS) cap badge, circa 1919.
It was officially worn immediately after WW1 by the Royal Navy’s MCS, a temporary service established in 1919 to sweep the massive number of sea mines left over from the conflict. The unit was then abolished in 1920 making original examples rare to find these days.
This large badge features a distinct and highly recognizable naval design, being a floating naval sea mine embossed in white that is set inside a small roundel, which is surrounded by a laurel wreath.
It is surmounted by a King’s Crown and below the wreath sits an ornate scroll inscribed with the words:
MINE CLEARANCE SERVICE
On the reverse it retains the two lugs, but the retaining pin and possibly a brass backing plate are now missing.
The badge is in excellent condition but has some cleaning wear to the raised mine detailing on the front.
It measures 3.2” (8.2cm) by 2.3” (5.8cm) and weighs 27g.
