WW2 Rolls-Royce C-Spanner GN8402 used on GRIFFON Engined Aircraft circa 1944
Here on offer is a WW2 period Rolls Royce “C” Spanner, reference GN 8402 that was used on GRIFFON engined aircraft and was part of some Admiralty fleet toolkits, circa 1944.
The Rolls-Royce GN8402 is a highly collectible C-spanner, was also known as a hook wrench.
The Rolls-Royce GRIFFON engine was a British 37- litre (2,240 cu in) capacity, 60-degree V12, liquid-cooled aircraft engine.
Design work on the Griffon started in 1938 at the request of the Fleet Air Arm, for use in new aircraft designs such as the Fairey Firefly. In 1939 it was also decided that the engine could be adapted for use in the Spitfire, but this was not developed. It was also used on the Avro Shackleton and a total of 8,108 engines where produced, until production ceased in 1955.
This small 6” metal spanner has ROLLS ROYCE in raised letters on one side of the handle and stamped on the other side is GN8402 and the circular Rolls-Royce maker mark. There is also a number that appears to be 3600.
The spanner is in excellent used condition and retains a lot of its original dark/blued finish.
A great addition for collectors of original Rolls-Royce tools.
The spanner measures 6” (15.3cm) long with an open wrench/hook jaw width of approximately 2.75” (6.5cm).
It weighs 112g.
