Antique Japanese Bamboo Cane Sword Stick with 17.5” Single Edged Steel Blade and 5” False Edge
Here on offer is an unusual version of an antique Japanese bamboo cane sword stick.
It has an impressive thin triangular section sectioned 17.5” steel sword blade with a single cutting edge, that is very sharp. Unusually it has a 5” long false edge to the top section, near the tip, similar to what was seen on early sabre swords. I have never seen a false edge on a sword stick before.
I can’t see any maker’s marks on this blade and I am not sure where this blade was actually made, but given the false edge, I feel it is probably by a European maker?
This quality blade has some light surface rust and some greying and an area of pitting near the handle on both sides. I prefer to leave the blades as I find them, it helps support the age of the blade and this one I feel is very old!
The handle is made from a lovely section of the root ball of the bamboo and is fitted with a press button release catch, that ensures the blade can’t be drawn without the release button being pressed.
The blade fits snugly (one way) into the top of the bamboo scabbard and locks in place with some slight movement.
The top of the cane scabbard and the lower section of the handle have both have thin metal wire wrapped tightly around them, acting as collar that blends the join in the cane, disguising it very well.
The bamboo cane scabbard itself is in excellent condition, no cracks that I can see and has a beautiful patina to the finish, with some beautiful natural graining patterns.
The tip has been fitted with what looks to be a large black painted metal ferrule, possibly made from aluminium?
This is a fine sword stick/cane, with a very interesting blade that would make a great addition to any edged weapon collection.
It also acts perfectly as a walking stick with no indication it’s a sword stick.
The blade measures 17.5” (44.5cm) long and 0.6” (1.5cm) wide, tapering to 0.45 (1.15cm) near the tip. It also has a 5” (12.7cm) false edge at the tip.
With the blade inserted, the sword stick measures 35” (89cm) long.
It weighs 360g.
