Unusual South American Gaucho Type Knife with Beautiful Striped Lucite Handle and Leather Sheath c1930
Here on offer is an unusual South American Gaucho Knife type knife with a beautiful striped Lucite handle and leather sheath, circa 1930.
My belief is these very fine knives were made in Solingen Germany by a number of makers, for export to Brazil and were made between 1927 and 1940.
They where made to be carried by the “wealthy” South Americans, both men and women, as a form of protection.
The handle is very unusual and appears to be made from striped honey coloured Lucite that has been carved and shaped into a tooth grip. It actually fits your hand very well and the smoothed teeth, provide a good grip.
The mint 5” single edged blade is actually in the style of a Caucho knife blade, with the tang being offset towards the top edge.
One side of the highly polished steel blade it is engraved with an ornate floral pattern.
There is no makers mark, but I believe these blades were made in Germany.
The black leather sheath is in excellent condition, retaining all its original stitching and is fitted with white metal mounts and frog loop.
I haven’t seen another knife like this one and I feel it will make a great addition to any collection.
The blade measures 5” (12.7cm) and the whole knife is 9” (22.8cm) long.
It weighs 60g.
