WW1 British Officers Weighted Leather Covered Riding Crop
Here on offer is a great example of a WW1 British officers weighted leather covered riding crop.
During WW1, heavy-duty riding crops featuring weighted or reinforced leather ends, often colloquially termed 'cosh whips' or 'loaded crops', were carried by British cavalry officers and military dispatch riders.
Cavalry officers and riders utilized crops to guide horses, open gates, and occasionally to swat at obstacles or ward off enemy infantry.
Dispatch Riders: For motorcycle riders dodging enemy lines in altered French terrain, the weighted crop doubled as an effective, easily deployable self-defence weapon during close-quarters encounters.
They were constructed using a strong core, such as a stout bamboo or plaited rawhide shaft. This would then be expertly cladded in brown or black English leather.
The top pommel or "root ball" was heavily reinforced or weighted (often with lead) to provide a solid strike if necessary.
The other end would be fitted with a leather tongue or loop.
This example is in excellent condition, covered in fine brown leather, that is stitched in place along one edge, even up and over the pommel. It has a 4.5” leather tongue that is held in place with thin twin.
It measures 27” (68.5cm) long, including the tongue and weighs 170g.
