Scarce WW2 Issue of Needlewoman and Needlecraft Magazine Supplement - Wartime Mail No.16 - 1943
Here on offer is a genuine WW2 Issue of a Needlewoman and Needlecraft Magazine Supplement, Wartime Mail No.16, issued in 1943.
Needlewoman and Needlecraft was a popular UK crafting quarterly formed by a merger between The Needlewoman and Needlecraft Practical Journal. It’s very first issue was published in January 1940, and it continued running until 1970.
During WW2, severe paper rationing forced the publication to drastically reduce its page size to just over A5.
To keep up with high demand for home-front crafting, knitting, and "make do and mend" clothing renovation techniques under resource limitations, the publishers issued frequent, thin, coupon-free "Wartime Mail" pattern supplements alongside their main quarterly releases. Because they were produced sequentially starting from 1940, Issue No. 16 landed precisely in 1943.
Given the fragile nature of these thin embroidery patterns, very few survive today, so this fine example is a rare find.
It depicts the images of a ration book and the items that you could get with one. Then there is the image of a fighter aircraft, probably a Spitfire along with a tank in a tropical/desert scene and battleship at sea.
It also promotes the use of Clark’s Anchor threads and Milwards “Gold Seal” embroidery needles.
The supplement is in excellent condition with just the original staple holes visible along the central fold.
It measures 9.7” (24.5cm) by 8.1” (20.6cm).
It will be sent in a large padded envelope with a cardboard backing.
