Mint Vintage Richards of Sheffield "Tent Brand" Small Bowie-Style Knife with Original Leather Sheath c1950
Here on offer is a mint example of a vintage Richards of Sheffield "Tent Brand" small bowie-style knife with its original leather sheath, circa 1950.
This is a compact fixed-blade utility or small fighting knife, manufactured by Richards of Sheffield under their lesser-seen "Tent Brand" line.
It has a mint 3.5” polished clip-point blade, that is faintly etched on one side with:
RICHARDS
TENT BRAND
SHEFFIELD ENGLAND
It has a full-length tang spine running through the grip.
The grip scales seem to be made from hollow metal wrapped in a celluloid covering, that has been printed underneath to look like stacked leather rings, often used on such knife grips.
The bolster finger guard and domed pommel seem to be chrome plated.
It retains its original stitched soft tan leather sheath that is in excellent condition.
It is embossed on the front with, “SHEFFIELD ENGLAND” and the press-stud on the retaining strap is marked “NEWEY ENGLAND”, a well-known closure hardware maker for British utility goods in the 1950’s.
The knifes construction, along with the chrome plating and use of celluloid, harps back to production styles from the 1950s–60s, a period when Richards was exporting in quantity to Commonwealth and overseas markets.
These knives where not made from the best quality materials, so it is actually rare to find a mint example, as most now show signs of plating loss and pitting to the finish.
The blade measures 3.5” (8.8cm) long and the knife is 7.25” (18.4cm) long.
It weighs 94g.
