Rare 19th Century 18” Anglo-Indian Carved Ebony Scholar's Wrist Rest

Here on offer is a rare and beautifully carved 19th century 18” long, Anglo-Indian ebony scholar's wrist rest, in mint condition.

It is referenced historically as a scholar's wrist rest, a clerk's arm support, or an element from a larger writing slope and it is a rare and highly collectible piece of colonial-era gentleman's library furniture.

These utilitarian objects were elevated into luxury art pieces of Anglo-Indian treen, to serve British East India Company officials, colonial administrators, and wealthy merchants who spent hours writing correspondence in ink.

It has been crafted from solid, dense, and heavy coromandel or Macassar ebony. Genuine 19th-century ebony feels remarkably cold to the touch and possesses a massive, structural weight that cannot be replicated by modern ebonized softwoods.

This hexagonal sided example has relief carvings of continuous scrolling flowers and foliage on all eight of the flat sides. Then on both ends is displays a central flower surrounded with a petal pattern.

The deep relief carving on this example is superb and it is in mint undamaged condition, making it a truly impressive and rare piece.

It measures 18.1” (46cm) long and is 1.27” (3.3cm) across the hexagonal flat sides.

It weighs 440g.
