Fine Antique Horn Handled Ridding Crop with Concealed Blade – Short Sword Stick

Here on offer is the best example of an antique horn handled riding crop with a concealed blade (short sword stick), that I have ever owned. Probably made in the early 1900’s.

It has a beautiful blonde horn handle carved into the form of a horse’s leg, that has been fitted on the top with a flat silver horse shoe. The horn is in excellent condition, with just a natural groove and small shallow hole.

The silver horse shoe is not hallmarked but tests as 925 silver and is held in place with three metal pins.

The concealed blade is of rectangular form and tapers to a very sharp tip. It is in excellent condition, with just some light areas of age darkening to the steel finish, that may polish out.

It has a metal scabbard that is covered with thin plaited brown leather and the tip still retains its leather tongue/flap. There is a plaited leather hand loop at the top and the whole scabbard is just in perfect condition.

The blade still fits very snuggly into the scabbard and requires some force to remove it, but it isn’t going to fall out and just looks like a riding crop when inserted.

I am not sure of the exact use of this type of crop, other than for personal protection when in the field.

With the blade concealed, the ridding crop measures 21.75” (55.2cm) long and the blade itself is 14.2” (36cm) long.

It weighs 195g.
