19th Century Afghan Salawar Short Sword 'Khyber Knife' with 15” Blade and Antler Horn Grip

Here on offer is what I believe is an early 19th century antler horn hilted Indo-Persian Afghan Salawar short sword, more commonly known as the infamous 'Khyber knife’.

This type of sword was the dread of many British soldier’s, serving on the North West Frontier during the 19th and early 20th century.

The 15” hand forged steel blade is actually in great condition, with just some light pitting and age related dark staining.

This example is a less common variant with a thick flat straight blade and not the usual 'T' section spine. It retains a sharp cutting edge, that runs the whole length of the blade.

It fits securely, no wobble, into a steel bolster with a stepped finger guard and large brass collar.

The antique solid natural antler horn grip, has a wonderful smooth patina and is held in place with a steel pin running through the tang.

It comes with its original wooden scabbard that is covered in thin red leather, that is stitched along one edge. There is now some leather missing from the tip, but the remaining leather is held securely in place.

This is clearly a very old example of one of these famous swords, that was most likely used for personal protection, over 150 years ago. I can’t stress what an impressive sword this is to hold.

The blade measures 15” (38cm) long and the whole sword is 19.75” (50.2cm).

It weighs 500g.
