Scarce WW2 German Navy Officers Kriegsmarine Dagger by PUMA with Etched Blade

Here on offer is an original WW2 German Kriegsmarine Officer’s dagger with etched blade by a scarce maker PUMA.

The ivory coloured grip is the celluloid over wood version and is in great condition. It does have a small “stress” crack at the top and bottom, undoubtedly caused by overtightening of the pommel at some point in its life. They are both stable and with a portepee fitted, you wouldn’t even see them. It still retains its original twisted brass grip wire.

The finely detailed brass cross guard and eagle pommel, are in excellent condition, but have lost their gilt and now have a polished brass finish.

The double fullered blade is also in excellent condition. Both sides of the blade are beautifully etched with a central a fouled anchor design, surrounded by floral/oakleaf motifs, swirling waves, and sea serpents.

The blade edges do have two shallow nicks where it may have been “played” (sword fighting) with as they sometimes were! I have tried to show them in my photos but they are very small.

It has a sharp tip which looks to have been possibly been sharpened at some point? The bright plated finish does show some light age darkening marks, on both sides.

On one side of the ricasso it is clearly etched with PUMA head logo set above the word:

SOLINGEN

It still retains its original leather scabbard buffer pad.

The blade fits very snuggly into the scabbard and the domed release button works perfectly, but now has a slightly pitted finish.

The lightning pattern scabbard is in excellent condition with just the slightest shallow mark on the back towards the tip. It still retains its two rounded scabbard screws and smooth suspension rings. On the back near the top, it has the initials “HB” scratched on it, maybe the owners initials?

This is actually a fine example of a true WW2 period dagger by a scarce maker of these daggers, often missing in many Kriegsmarine collections.

The blade measures 9.9” (25cm) and the dagger in the scabbard is 16.4” (41.5cm) long.

It weighs 385g.
