Fine Victorian “Dummy” 10.5” Scottish Dirk with Silver Fittings and Coloured Stones
Here on offer is a fine example of an antique Victorian period “Dummy” Scottish dirk.
This is truly a quality made piece, albeit I can’t see a maker mark or hallmark on it.
A Victorian “Dummy” Scottish dirk is a non-functional, decorative kilt accessory or prop, designed to look like a traditional Highland dagger without having a sharp or removable metal blade.
During the Victorian era, Queen Victoria's deep affection for Scottish Highland culture popularized traditional dress, leading to mass-produced or costume-grade accessories.
Even “Dummy” versions often incorporate classic details like a faux-cairn stone (often coloured glass), thistle carvings, or Celtic knotwork on the handle.
They were worn as a safe alternative for children, theatrical productions, or general Highland dress wear where real steel was impractical or restricted.
This fine example seems to have been carved from one solid piece of wood, that has a black lacquer finish on the sheath section and a carved Celtic knot pattern on the handle.
All the metal fittings appear to be made from Scottish silver (tests as sterling silver), that are engraved on the front edges with flowing leaf patterns. There are also silver rims that secure the coloured stones in place on the pommel and fixed faux miniature knife and fork.
It still retains the original suspension bar on the back, where it would have been fitted with a leather hanger.
The large pommel stone appears to be a dark facetted Cairngorm stone and the two small fixed faux tools (knife & fork) are fitted with Citrine stones.
The two faux tools (just the wooden handles) also have carved Celtic knot patterned handles and they are securely fixed in place and can’t be removed.
This rare example is in excellent condition with just some loss of lacquer on the back and sides of the sheath. The handle has a wonderful aged patina, with some lighter “rub” areas on the back.
This makes a wonderful and unusual example of an antique “Dummy” Scottish dirk, that really looks like the real thing and can still be worn today, without causing any “PC” issues!
It measures 10.5” (26.7cm) long and weighs 90g.
