Vintage William Rodgers “I CUT MY WAY” Stiletto Knife with Serrated Blade, Stacked Brass Grip and Custom Leather Sheath

Here on offer is a near mint example of a vintage commando style stiletto knife by William Rodgers “I CUT MY WAY”, with the more unusual serrated edge on one side of the blade.

It has a near mint 6” double edged stiletto type blade with a mirror bright finish. It as a serrated cutting edge on one side and the other has the normal plain cutting edge, with just one tiny ding that you can only feel with your finger nail.

On one side of the ricasso, it is stamped with the maker’s details:

WILLIAM
RODGERS
I CUT MY WAY

Then on the other side it reads:

STAINLESS
MADE IN
SHEFFIELD
ENGLAND

It is fitted with an oval shaped polished brass finger guard.

The grip has been made up of about 40 tapering brass discs separated with black plastic dices and finished at the top and bottom with a thick red plastic disc.


At the top it is fitted with a solid oval shaped polished aluminium pommel that secures the blade tang with a recessed hexagonal brass nut at the top.
Unusually it also has a lanyard hole drilled through it, that is slightly offset, ensuring it misses the blade tang.

It comes with a custom made brown leather stitched and riveted sheath, with a slotted belt loop and retaining strap with a press stud fixing. The front has a semi-circular embossed pattern applied.

Some history about William Rodgers that I found on one of the excellent knife forums:

The famous 'I Cut My Way' mark originally belonged to a a Sheffield cutler called Thomas Hobson, who operated in the late 19th century. It was acquired by John Clarke & Son before WW1. Clarke had set up in business in the mid 19th century, and as well as a cutler and factor, he also helped recruit Sheffield cutlers to go to work in America. After acquiring the 'I Cut My Way' mark, they used it in conjunction with the name 'William Rodgers' (though I have seen Clarke knives also marked with it), and this became a 'stand alone' brand for them. The choice of name was clearly an attempt to confuse buyers into thinking there was an association with the much more famous and prestigious Joseph Rodgers firm, and even today, people commonly think the two firms were related.

While Clarke's went under in the 1960's, their mark (and the William Rodgers mark) is today owned by the Eggington group of companies.

The knife is in near mint condition and looks to be unused. This is actually the only such knife I have owned that has the serrated blade, making it a great collector’s piece, by a famous English knife maker.

The blade measures 6” (15.3cm) long and the knife itself is a total of 10.6” (27cm) long.

Including the sheath, it weighs 225g.
