Superb WW1 Royal Marines Officer’s Malacca Walking Stick with Ornate Hallmarked Silver Top - Birmingham 1918

Here on offer is a fine mint example of a WW1 Royal Marines officer’s, silver topped Malacca walking stick.

The top pommel is crafted from hallmarked silver and features intricate repoussé and chased floral/scroll work, surrounding an early Royal Marines insignia.

This WW1 period insignia, displays the royal crown above a laurel wreath encircling the globe and the motto
"Per Mare Per Terram" (By Sea, By Land), with a scroll below reading "Gibraltar", that commemorates the historic 1704 capture of the Rock.

There is also a full set of clear English Hallmarks, which show the Lion Passant for English silver, along with an anchor, indicating it was assayed in Birmingham and the date letter t for 1918.

There is also a maker’s mark being the letters ‘MB’, set inside two separate circles. I believe this may relates to the Marshall Brothers, of Birmingham, England.

The shaft is made of Malacca cane, that is very thick and solid and has a beautiful golden patina finish.

It also has a plain un-hallmarked silver band fitted around the shaft that was designed to be engraved with the owner’s details.

The tip has a large fitted nickel silver ferrule.

This is the best example I have ever owned and given its mint condition, I would say it has never been used, possibly because the officer may have not returned from his WW1 term of service, who knows?

It measures 33.5” (85cm) long and about 1.4” (3.5cm) diameter at the top.

It weighs 240g.
