Antique Cane Walking Stick with concealed Dip Pen, Pencil and Ink Bottle c1890

Here on offer is a fine example of an antique cane walking stick with a concealed dip pen, pencil and ink bottle, circa 1890.

This is a more unusual version of this type of walking stick, given that it unscrews into three sections, two smaller 4” sections and a longer 26.75” section. On others examples I have seen they break down into three equal lengths, which actually makes using the pen and pencil impractical.

All the metal fittings apart from the ferrule tip, seem to be made from copper that originally would have been silver plated.

The metal pommel unscrews and reveals a concealed cylindrical clear glass ink bottle with a metal topped and cork stopper.

The upper section also unscrews and reveals a metal lead pencil holder, currently with any lead.
The next section, when unscrewed reveals a steel tipped dip pen.

There is some initial looseness between the sections, more noticeably the first section into the second. It still attaches tightly when fully screwed in, and could still be used as a walking stick, but I would class it as a display collectors piece given its age. It looks to have some thin clear line applied in-between the thread, to assist with the “bite”.

The tip is fitted with a steel ferrule.

All the cane sections are in excellent condition, with no splits or damage that I can see.

This type of cane would mostly have been used by a Victorian writer or artist, so they could capture the moment they experienced on a walk.

It measures 35.75” (91cm) long and about 0.8” (2cm) diameter at the top.

It weighs 150g.
