Antique Pruning Knife with Hawksbill Blade and Beautiful Stag Antler Grip by SAYNOR c1890

Here on offer is an antique pruning knife with a large curved hawksbill blade and fine stag antler grip plates, by SAYNOR, circa c1890.

SAYNOR are known for making top quality pruning knives, making them very collectable and in high demand.

The large 3.5” curved hawksbill shaped steel blade is in good condition but shows signs of dark rust pitting to the finish, some of which may polish out. It has a sharp cutting edge with some usage knicks but retains most of its original curve. Many of this type of pruning knife have had their blades sharpened some much they have lost the curve!

One side of the blade is stamped with the maker’s name:

Then on the ricasso it is stamped:

The blade opens and closes well, with a firm spring action and locks firmly into place with no wobble.

The curved grip fits perfectly in your hand and is made up of two slices of fine stag antler that have been shaped to form a tight fit to the steel blade liners, being held in place with multiple steel pins. They now have a beautiful dark age patina, that has formed over the years.

They are in really excellent condition with NO splits or cracks, which is so hard to find on these knives, as they normally split where the steel pins rust and expand over time.

The grip is finished with a steel bolster at one end, that is in great condition and a flat brass cap at the other end.

This example will make a great addition to any antique knife collection and will only increase in value.

The curved blade measures about 3.5” (8.8cm) with a 2.8” (7.3cm) cutting edge. When closed the grip measures 4.75” (12cm).

It weighs 160g.
