Vintage Pocket Pruning Knife with Buffalo Horn Grip by I XL George Wostenholm of Sheffield c1960

Here on offer is a vintage pruning knife with a 2.5” swayback pruning blade and buffalo horn grip, by I XL George Wostenholm of Sheffield, circa 1960.

It has a 2.5” high carbon steel swayback pruning blade, that features a narrow, curved profile (often referred to as a “peach pruner”), making it ideal for:

Fine pruning and grafting
Harvesting fruit and vegetables
Cutting stems, twine, and light materials

On one side of the ricasso it is stamped with:

I XL GEORGE
WOSTENHOLM
SHEFFIELD
ENGLAND

It still opens and closes with a firm non-locking action with no “wobble”.

The steel now shows some patches of dark staining to the finish.

The grip is made up of two fine dark buffalo scales, that are in excellent condition with no damage. They are held in place against the steel liners, by three steel pins. At the end it is fitted with a steel bolster.

These functional knives are still manufactured today by I XL George Wostenholm and sell for just under £100!

The blade measures 2.75” (7cm) long with a 2.25”” (5.7cm) cutting edge.

The knife is 6” (15.2cm) long when fully open and it weighs 52g.
