Antique Square Cut-Glass Inkwell set in an Ornate Silver-Plated Stand by Walker & Hall Sheffield 1891
Here on offer is an antique Victorian square cut-glass inkwell set in an ornate silver-plated desk stand, by Walker & Hall of Sheffield, dating to 1891.
The impressive square desk stand depicts the raised images of urns on the four sides and upright floral swirls at each corner, which also act as pen rests. The top edges are finished with a beaded pattern. It has been well polished during its life and now shows loss of the plating, mainly to the raised urns and edges of the stand. It is possible to apply a silver solution to re-plate the worn areas.
On the base it is clearly stamped with the maker’s details:
The famous Walker & Hall flag with “W & H”
A shield with the Greek letter Theta, ‘θ’ for the year of manufacture, being 1891.
The number 1386, which was most likely the design number.
a
nd the words:
WALKER & HALL
SHEFFIELD
There is also the number 23, but I don’t know what that relates to?
Fixed securely to the centre of the stand is a square cut-glass inkwell with a cut-glass hinged lid. The glass is in great condition with just some dibbles to the diamond cut edges of the lid and a chip to one of the lower corners of the base, which is inserted into the stand and hard to see.
The silver-plated hinge frame shows some warping/crushing and doesn’t sit fully down onto the main body, but it opens and closes as it should. Nearly all the plating has now been lost to the finish, exposing the brass base metal.
It is probably worth undertaking some restoration of the fine Victorian English piece, given what they sell for in better condition.
The stand measures 5” (12.5cm) square and the glass inkwell is 2.2” (5.5cm) square.
It weighs 655g.
