Mint Gentleman’s or Lobster knife by Jürgen Moede of Solingen c1950
Here on offer is an ornate gentleman’s knife by Jürgen Moede, Solingen, circa 1950.
J. Moede Solingen was a traditional German cutlery and pocket knife manufacturing business based in Solingen, Germany, founded and operated by artisan Jürgen Moede. It ceased operations and closed its doors in the late 1980s.
Craftsmanship: According to specialty dealers like Country Knives, Moede knives were considered the last of their era, built to old-world manufacturing and hand-finishing standards not commonly practiced today.
They specialized in gentleman’s dress pocket knives, pen knives, lobster pattern multi-blades, and multi-function tools featuring nail files, cleaners, and specialized blades.
Because they closed decades ago, original pieces in mint or unused vintage condition are now sought-after collector items on the secondary and vintage knife market.
This style of gentleman’s (personal grooming) knife is also known as a lobster knife, albeit it is not used for eating lobster, but by its characterised by its traditional folding design, typically a small, multi-tool pocketknife.
This mint example features ornate decorative gold, red and black, “Toledo” damascene grip plates.
It has a mint condition 2.25” stainless steel blade, with a 2” single cutting edge and on one side of the ricasso it is marked:
J. MOEDE
ROSTFREI
STAINLESS
Then there is a double sided manicure nail file with a pointed tip for cleaning your nails and a pair of small scissors, with a leaf spring action.
The knife is in mint condition and looks to have never been used.
This knife will make a wonderful addition to any penknife collection.
The blade measures 2.25” (5.7cm) and has a 2” (5.1cm) cutting edge. The nail file measures 1.6” (4cm) and when closed, the knife measures 3.1” (8cm).
It weighs 38g.
