Large French Silver-Plated - WW2 German Police Basting Spoon from the Island of Jersey

Here on offer is a top quality example of a large French made, silver-plated, WW2 German Police mess serving or basting spoon, from the Island of Jersey.

My understanding is that during WW2, the German military commandeered commercial French-made hotel, restaurant, or civilian silverware and repurposed it for their own use. In this case it was used by the German occupation or Police forces (Ordnungspolizei) based in Jersey during WW2.

There is a detailed raised silver-plated German Police eagle insignia, set onto the front of the handle of the spoon. There is a tiny bit of plating loss around the swastika.

In the bowl of the spoon there are two stamped marks. One is rubbed but you can just make out it reads as:

METAL ALLIAGES BLANC

This translates to read as:

WHITE METAL ALLOYS

There is also another mark which is a French “handshake” mark above “8GR”

A French silver plate mark of 8GR (or 8G) indicates the weight of pure silver—8 grams—used in the electroplating process for that item or set of flatware, typically dating between approximately 1860 and 1983.

I can’t see any other marks on the spoon, but both the marks on the spoon, often are associated with the French maker, S.F.A.M., Société Française d'Alliage de Métaux, created in 1926 in Bornel, Oise region. Renamed Orfèvrerie de Chambly in 1983. Closed in 2004.

This rare spoon is in excellent condition with no signs of plating loss, just some light usage scratch marks.

I am told came from a collection of Militaria that was left over from the German occupation of the British Island of Jersey at the end of WW2.

The spoon measures 10.6” (27cm) long and weighs 135g.
