Here on offer is a vintage and unique presentation 3rd Pattern FS fighting knife by J. Nowill, awarded to Sgt Andrew Melville of the SAS on being awarded the Military Medal c1991.

It has a 7” double-edged blade in forged carbon steel with blued finish.

The cast metal alloy handle has a steel oval guard and a hexagonal nut pommel.

The base of the handle has the J.Nowill trademarks and the oval guard is stamped with the NATO and Crowfoot marks along with the maker’s details:

ENGLAND

It comes with its original black leather and metal tipped sheath with stitching tabs and elastic tab.

Sgt Melville was awarded the Military Medal on the 29th June 1991 for his services in the British SAS, during operation Granby. This was the name given to the British Armed Forces deployment to the Middle East after the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait on 2 August 1990 and subsequent operations during the 1991 Gulf War.

He was also listed in the London Gazette on the 5th December 1997, as:

24355763 Sergeant Andrew Melville, The Parachute Regiment.

That is all the information I can currently find out about Sgt Andrew Melville, but it does warrant further researching.

It comes with a couple of photocopies of pages confirming the Military Medal details.

Unfortunately, the knife has been stored inside the leather sheath, in a damp area that has resulted in the leather sheath becoming slightly damp. This has led to the tip of knife and some small pin head points near the crossguard, becoming pitted because of rust.
The upper two rivets on the back of the sheath near the crossguard have rusted but the lower rivet is fine.

All the rusted areas have been cleaned and a rust treatment applied which fortunately has removed the rust and left a black finish, which almost matches the blueing on the blade and fittings. So, it still displays very well!

I would not recommend storing the knife in sheath anymore, as I can’t tell what rust may remain inside it? But the two displayed next to each other, look really good.

The blade measures 7” (17.7cm) and the knife is 11.6” (29.5cm) long.

With the sheath it weighs 275g.
