Victorian Silver Cheroot Mouthpiece Case Hallmarked Chester 1896 with Short Bakelite Cheroot Holder
Here on offer is a fine antique Victorian silver cheroot mouthpiece case, hallmarked Chester 1896 and it includes a short Bakelite cheroot holder.
The case has a plain finish with a suspension ring at one end and a hinged tight fitting cap at the other.
Inside the case it has a fine gilt finish, which is a true sign of quality.
On the inside rim, there are a full set of clear English Hallmarks, which show the Lion Passant for English silver, along with Three Towers, indicating it was assayed in Chester and the date letter N for 1896.
On the other side, there is a maker’s mark which looks like the letters ‘AO & Co’.
This Chester maker mark is known for making tobacco related silver items, like vesta cases, cigarette cases etc., but there is not a name associated with then that I can find?
The case is in great condition, with just a small shallow dent on the side.
It also comes with a small dark red Bakelite cheroot holder that fits in the case, but slides up and down, but was possibly used with a cheroot already inserted, so ready to remove and smoke?
The case measures 3” (7.75cm) long including the ring and about 0.8” (2cm) diameter at the top and weighs 14g.
The cheroot holder is 1.6” (4.2cm) long and 0.6” (1.6cm) square at the top and weighs 3g.
